(Round One was the insulation, in case that wasn’t obvious.)
The folks at Bangor Bungalow guilted me into this. They probably didn’t realize they did, but that’s just the nature of competitive houseblogging.
I knew we needed to put plastic on our windows – known for a while, in fact. Most of the windows downstairs are sealed up tight – a combination of being less than 50 years old and a bead of Seal-n-Peel in the seams. The windows upstairs, on the other hand – the old windows – they leak like the Southwestern Nebraska Community College intramural hockey team’s second-string goalie. Was that analogy too much of a stretch? They leak LOTS AND LOTS. Therefore, ipso facto, they need plastic shrink-wrap around the frames, Q.E.D.
Until I saw the great removable, reusable plastic-wrapped interior storm windows that Sarah and Ken made. Grrr – they’re so nice.
So I went to ReStore, bought enough old oak casing (ten cents a foot!) to do two windows and got to work. It was thick and sturdy enough that I didn’t need the center piece Sarah and Ken used, but on the other hand, my mitered corners aren’t as strong as their lap-joints. I’ll say this, though – cutting miters by hand sucks, so gimme some serious credit for that. I’m not making any more until I find a used compound miter saw on Craigslist. Instead of foam pipe insulation, I cut them within 1/16″ and filled the gaps with Seal-n-Peel.
Dude – they look great! You’ll win any competitive houseblogging dealie because you have a ReStore – all we have is trash day & yard sales (only in summer).
Ken says they look fantastic. Hope they work!
They look great —- impressive.
Now: why don’t you pop on over and help fix my furnace? As a bonus, I can provide 1) childcare and 2) temps above freezing.
This latter is critical because, as I mentioned: NO FURNACE.
I LOVE this idea!

What a great idea! I’m not sure whether or not I could replicate it successfully for our windows as every one of those suckers is awash in SHUTTERS.
